He is always the one who chooses the direction.
V appears, on the surface, to be the most conventionally composed of the four. He is calm, gentlemanly, easy to be around, and rarely lets his emotions spill out without restraint. His mind does not leap beyond the boundaries of convention the way G’s does; his feelings do not show themselves as openly as D’s; nor is he the kind of person who survives a crisis through instinct and physical ability as B does. Instead, he takes in the situation as a whole and calmly chooses the most practical and reasonable course. In the conventional sense of balance and judgment, V is probably the strongest of the four.
But that balance is not the whole of him. V can be astonishingly uncompromising when it comes to something he believes is right. He listens to other people and is capable of reconsidering his position when circumstances change. But once he has reached the conviction that this is the right thing to do, he will not bend that choice for the sake of his own convenience, fear, or the magnitude of what he stands to lose. And that severity is always directed at himself.
V is the one who chooses the direction for G:B not because he has the loudest voice, but because when he decides where they need to go, he also accepts the responsibility of being the first to step forward. If he believed that flying toward the sun was the right thing to do, he would not change course even as the flames closed around him. To V, what is right is not merely something to believe in. It is a way of life.
FAVORITE FASHION BRANDS
When you step back and look at V’s wardrobe as a whole, a certain consistency begins to emerge. Soft construction, functional proportions with room to move, fine materials, and clothes that bring out the presence of the person wearing them. Offstage, the brand he has returned to for years is UMIT BENAN.
From the strongly narrative collections of his early years to the more personal wardrobes he creates today, founder Umit Benan has continued to portray men living in the real world through a distinctly individual lens. His expression has grown quieter over time, but the strong character of the clothes—and his distinctive vision of men—have remained. That perspective has long been one of the defining qualities of his menswear.
There is a certain aesthetic sensibility shared by the work of V and UMIT BENAN. In particular, the male figures Benan has returned to again and again—refined, yet grounded in physicality and a certain earthiness—echo an aesthetic V has expressed through his music. V himself probably does not think about it in quite those terms, but perhaps that is part of the reason he keeps returning to the brand.
