Sixteen active hand grenades and 393 rounds of ammunition believed to date from World War II were discovered in East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara.
The weapons were found on April 1 by residents displaced by eruptions of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki while they were digging a septic tank at a government-built temporary housing facility in Konga Village.
East Flores Police identified the explosives as Type 97 hand grenades, a model used by Japanese forces during World War II.
The grenades were moved to a bunker away from residential areas. The ammunition was secured at a joint police-military security post.
A bomb disposal team from the East Nusa Tenggara Police was assigned to handle the grenades and carry out their safe disposal.
