D is quick to respond to people and to whatever catches his interest. If something intrigues him, he will start a conversation without hesitation and genuinely enjoy the exchange. His attention may move rapidly from one subject to the next, yet he is equally quick to notice a change in someone’s expression, tone of voice, or the atmosphere around him. When someone seems even slightly different from usual, he often senses it before he knows the reason why.

His interests may shift easily, but once a person or an object becomes important to him, that attachment is slow to fade. A relationship may end, or an object may have long since served its purpose, but that alone does not make it part of the past for D. As a result, the number of things he holds dear seems to grow little by little. He remembers casual words and events from years ago, sometimes carrying them longer than the other person involved. When he is hurt, he feels it openly; when he is angry, he is genuinely angry. Even so, emotional turbulence and a change in how he feels about someone are two entirely different things to him. Those accumulated feelings naturally spill into the songs D creates and into his drumming. Memories from the distant past, even regrets he could not put into words at the time, can be lifted back into the music as though they were happening to him in this very moment. That emotional depth is one of the sources of the power in his expression.

There is no fixed formula to the way D dresses. He takes in the whole picture—the expression on his face that morning, the tone of his skin, the way his hair happens to fall, even the mood he wakes up in—and chooses whatever makes him look his best that day. If a shop catches his eye, he will wander in; at the places he knows well, conversation with the staff is part of the pleasure. For D, getting dressed is tied to the small discoveries of everyday life.

Lately, his eye has kept returning to Ann Demeulemeester. His reasons are probably far more instinctive: the moment he puts something on and thinks, “This is it today,” or catches himself looking just a little better in the mirror. For him, that is reason enough.

What is interesting is how accurately that instinctive choice seems to reflect D’s own sensibility. In Ann Demeulemeester, rock and poetry, strength and fragility, structure and fluidity are allowed to coexist within a single look. That ability to hold opposing qualities at once feels remarkably close to D himself, whose presence can shift from one day to the next. Whether he is consciously aware of the connection is probably beside the point.
