AS SEEN BY EDDIE RUSSO:
THE 2012 MODEL FALL INCIDENT
A woman's shrill, furious voice burst from a smartphone.
“You fucking bitch... You think you can pull that shit on me? I’m done letting you get away with it. I’ll drag you straight to hell.”
A video, barely more than ten seconds long, had begun circulating on social media. It showed two women screaming at each other in the middle of a glittering party.
In a hotel room somewhere upstairs, a man watched the footage on his phone and muttered wearily,
“Here we go again.”
Angela and Britney were both young models in their early twenties. Ambitious, hot-tempered, and repeatedly competing for the same positions, they were well known in the industry as rivals. Their clashes—and the trouble that seemed to follow both of them—were nothing unusual to the man.
Irritated, he placed the phone facedown on the table.
The truth was, he was already sick of seeing that woman’s face.
---
An hour later, entirely different images were filling people’s screens.
Britney lying in front of the building, bleeding. Rain pounding the pavement. Posts pointing toward a rooftop balcony several floors above, overlaid with the words:
“From up there?”
When Britney’s death was reported, the video that only minutes earlier had been shared as “a huge fight between two models” began circulating again under a new description:
“Angela screaming at Britney shortly before her death.”
The posts multiplied by the minute.
Their long-running feud. Angela’s bad reputation. Her disputes with agents. The words she had shouted earlier that night. Old comments and short clips were dug up one after another, fragments being joined together into a single story.
Then came another video.
Angela, surrounded by police officers who had entered the party venue, being escorted out.

At around the same time, Eddie Russo was in the VIGUE editorial office, going through the final checks on an article.
He had been watching the Angela-and-Britney spectacle on his phone while working at his computer, mostly for entertainment.
Russo had known Angela since she was in her late teens. She was strong-willed, and once her temper took over, she had a habit of acting before she thought.
Until then, it had been little more than a distraction from work.
But when posts about Britney’s fall began appearing, even Russo stopped what he was doing.
“Oh... she died?”
He looked away from the article and began following the timeline more closely.
The building under the rain. Britney’s death. The fight video spreading again. Anonymous “industry insiders” suddenly speaking about Angela.
The more information appeared, the more a single narrative began taking shape across social media.
Then Russo saw the footage of Angela surrounded by police.
His eyes went to her dress before they went to her face—a long gown falling in dramatic, elegant drapes.
“Are they idiots? Angela didn’t do it. The hem of that Valentino isn’t even wet.”
Angela cared intensely about clothes.
If the social media reports were right and Britney had fallen from that balcony—or if anything had happened outside at all—there was no chance Angela would have walked into the rain dragging a floor-length hem behind her.
And yet when she was taken away, there was no sign of rain on the dress. No water marks. No splashes of mud.
---
By the next day, the entire industry was talking about it.
Backstage at shows, inside editorial offices—every conversation seemed to come back to Angela and Britney. Old stories about Angela’s past troubles and the details of her feud with Britney were being dragged back into the light.
Russo received a request to write about Angela as well.
The proposed piece would collect her violent temper, her previous misconduct, and other incidents from her past, shaping them into a story that effectively cast her as the culprit in Britney’s death.
There was no shortage of material.
But Russo refused the assignment.
Angela hadn’t done it.
And he had no intention of putting his name on an article designed to sell a person he believed was innocent as part of a murder story.
---
The other side of the incident began to emerge several weeks later.
Rumors travel quickly inside the industry.
After her fight with Angela that night, Britney had gone upstairs to meet an executive from one of the industry’s major companies.
The two had been lovers, but their relationship was already falling apart.
Britney possessed communications that supported allegations involving scandals the man had fabricated, backroom deals, the suppression of assault cases, and other activities he did not want exposed. She was using those records as leverage, demanding a payoff and guarantees that her position in the industry would be protected.
The man had intended to settle things with Britney that night.
But by the time she entered the room, she had already been drinking heavily.
Far too drunk to negotiate properly, Britney took the USB drive containing the records and walked out onto the rain-soaked rooftop balcony, taunting him.
He demanded that she hand over the USB.
Britney refused.
When he tried to take it by force, she resisted, and the two began pushing against each other near the railing.
In the struggle, Britney lost her balance.
A moment later, her body went over the railing and fell to the ground below.
That was what had happened that night.
---
The man panicked.
The USB was still in his hand.
If the contents of the drive came to light—or if anyone discovered that he had been with Britney immediately before her death—his problems would multiply very quickly.
He took the USB and left.
If he could get away now, he could deal with the rest later. He had handled plenty of problems that way before.
It took only minutes for images of Britney’s death to begin circulating.
At the same time, the video of Angela and Britney fighting once again flooded social media.
The suspicion falling on Angela was almost too convenient.
There was no reason for the man not to take advantage of it.
At extraordinary speed, old stories about Angela resurfaced across the media and social networks, and were treated almost automatically as pieces of the same case.
The request that had reached Russo had also come from the man’s company.
Something was almost certainly being moved behind the scenes.
---
Angela was released relatively quickly, and eventually her involvement in Britney’s fall was ruled out.
But having suspicion removed from you is not the same thing as having your reputation restored.
The footage of Angela screaming at Britney and shoving her remained online.
So did the images of her being led away surrounded by police.
The impression that she was “the woman who might have killed Britney” had traveled much faster, and much farther, than any later correction.
It would take time for her to return to where she had been.
Incidentally, the executive was never arrested in connection with Britney’s death.
He remains a powerful figure in the industry to this day, with considerable influence.

This was one of the events Russo witnessed early in his career that exposed something of the industry behind its polished surface. Russo remains on the front line of fashion journalism today, and incidents of varying scale continue to occur around the world he works in.
He knows perfectly well what exists behind the glamour, and what money and power can make people do.
He does not involve himself in every problem.
That is also part of knowing how to survive in this world.
There are things he sees and chooses not to pursue.
But when it comes to what appears under his own name, he makes that decision himself.
It is one of the few rules Eddie Russo insists on keeping.
